Birthday Party

Originally know as: The Boys next Door
Based out of: Melbourne, Australia
Labels: Missing Link Records, 4AD & Shock Records
Years together: 1976 - 1983

Members:
Nick Cave
Mick Harvey
Tracy Pew (deceased)
Phill Calvert
Rowland S. Howard (deceased)

Discography:

  3. It's still Living - 1985
  4. Best and Rarest - 1985
  5. Hee Haw - 1979 (re-released in 1988)
Sounds Like:
  • As: Nick Cave was vocals. Mick Harvey was vocals, guitar, and drums. Tracy Pew was on bass and vocals. Phill Calvert was on drums. & Rowland S. Howard was vocals and guitar Birthday Party is as if someone playing Jazz kicked your teeth in.

Live:
  • Being that I am way to young to have seen them live, I just have to go with what my mom told me: It made her scared for her safety. Check out the video below of them performing live:

Videos:
  • The band has one video that I know of for the song - Nick the Stripper - which makes me feel like I'm in some kind of zombie movie with really cool guitar tones.

In 1983 the band broke up due to a split between the friendship of Cave and Howard, in addition to work and drug related exhaustion. After the brake up the members formed other acts like; Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds, Crime and the City Solution, These Immortal Souls, and Honeymoon in Red.

Birthday Party has been noted for influencing bands such as:
  1. The Jesus and Mary Chain
  2. My Bloody Valentine
  3. The Jesus Lizard
  4. Dinosaur Jr
  5. The Horrors
and many more to this day...

This band is also a big influence on me personally as a musician and I hope everyone gives it a listen.

  • This band will make you lose yourself for their whole set.

At the Drive-In

Based out of: El Paso, Texas
Labels: Fearless Records & Grand Royal
Years together:
1993-2001

Members:
Cedric Bixler-Zavala
Jim Ward
Omar Rodriquez-Lopez
Paul Hinojos
Tony Hajjar

Discography:
  1. Aerobatic Tenement - 1996 (which Omar played bass on, not guitar)
  2. In/Casino/Out - 1998
  3. Relationship of Command - 2000

Sounds Like:
  • Five gifted persons; Cedric Bixler-Zavala as lead vocals, Jim Ward on guitar & backing vocals, Omar Rodriguez-Lopez on guitar/noise, Paul Hinojos on bass, and Tony Hajjar on drums. At The Drive-In (ATDI) could be compared to a can of rocks being whipped up by a hurricane {AWESOME}.

Live:
  • Being lucky enough to see this band before the breakup, I can tell you that it was an intense and life changing experience.

Video:
  • Thought provoking & visually pleasing: Check out "One Armed Scissor"

The reasoning for this bands dispersal was that Omar and Cedric felt as if ATDI had came to a point where there was no more room for experimentation & growth. The latest works of the former members of At The Drive-In are as follows: Mars Volta, De Facto, Sparta (SUCKS), and The Fall on Deaf Ears.

Parenthetical Girls

Sounds Like:
  • An array of gifted musicians playing an arrange of classical & modern instruments from violins to synths. Lead vocals sung by Zac Pennington, and supporting vocals by Rachael Jensen with back up vocals provided by both Eddy Crichton and Jherek Bischoff. The Parenthetical Girls can be described as intellectually experimental. Listening to them is like listening to 'The Sound of Music' on speed.

Live:
  • Live the Parenthetical Girls have both a great sense of stage presence & interaction with the crowd. They will make you feel other worldly and it is an experience worth having to see them.
Videos:
  • Simply Visually Pleasing: Check out "A Song For Ellie Greenwich"

As an overall the Parenthetical Girls in my opinion are a band worth listening to, an up and coming breath of fresh air worth keeping one's eye on.
